Im a
natural-born manager,
but I never really knew what I did
or how to teach it to others

Let me introduce
myself: my name is Mary Larson. I had
these challenges too! I got promoted
into management and suddenly I was
managing my former peers. I had so
many things to do I had to make sure
I was doing the right
things. I took it all home, but that
didnt help. How I wish I had
known then what I know now.
I have always been able to see how
the little pieces fit into the big
picture and how they can fit in

university warehouse for several
years in which we held the first
state-approved public auctions for
surplus university property. I
developed a system so that we could efficiently
utilize staff and warehouse
space, keep cycling the equipment out
of the unwanted areas, and make
money for the university at
the same time. My system is still
being used over 10 years later!
As the supervisor of the moving crew
at that same university, I developed
a system which combined direct
assignments with the self-assignment
of work. This system worked far
better than any previous attempt to
treat every worker exactly the same
and as if they could perform exactly
the same every day of the week. (That
is simply not realistic for this type
of physical work.)
Our injury and sick-leave rate was
reduced and job satisfaction
soared. Our customers, the
university staff, were served by a
moving crew that felt respected and
appreciated. No more slow downs, sick
leave over-usage, or customer
complaints. And all from creating a
system that allowed individuals to be
individuals. The system I created did
